Higher Wiscombe is the National Gold Winner of the Self Catering Holiday of the Year 2007/8 and offers three cottages, two that sleep six and one that sleeps twenty , all-in Five Star luxury.

Last year we entered the DEBI Sustainable Tourism award and were runners up. Spurred on by this success and a Gold award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme we looked to see how we could continue to enhance the sustainability of our business.
One way that we felt we that we could improve was recycling and this is the study focuses on our efforts in this area. We looked at the major components of waste and came up with the following headings. Glass: paper: cardboard: plastic bottles: tins and food waste. These were the primary targets. We were already recycling but now we were aiming to make it much easier for our guests to actually do the recycling.

First target was to find a collection service, we were making lots of dedicated recycling journeys and this was not either efficient or environmental. After a long search, we a company right on our doorstep. They did not insist that different coloured glass should be separated, would collect cardboard, (the business generates a lot of cardboard waste), and paper. Collections were organised and they provided the bins for this waste. We added bins for clean plastic bottles and tins.

Food waste remained our biggest problem. We could only really deal with vegetable and fruit matter and this went on our compost heap. The next thing we knew the rats were having a field day and we had to deal with them. We were then told about Green Cones by The Green Tourism Business Scheme and promptly ordered and installed them.

To offer our self catering guests a simple solution of “ALL FOOD WASTE” is the key to it’s success. We now can ask that no food waste is put in the general rubbish and the very large proportion of our customers adhere to this. We can see the Green Cone area from our window and every morning we can see a guest topping up the green cones.

We have already had very positive feedback and several of our guests have already ordered their own for installation at home.

The rubbish that we take to the top of the drive is now not only less, but less “fragrant” in warm, weather, a massive improvement.

We will continue to monitor the impact that this has and the feedback from our guests. So far it has been a great success and the reduction of waste going to landfill since this enhanced programme has been introduced is over 75%.
